The Silent Night Chapel of Oberndorf

NOT OFFERED IN 2010

The Silent Night Memorial Chapel

Along the Salzach River in the delightful village of Oberndorf, visit the Silent Night Memorial Chapel, which stands on the original site of the Romanesque St. Nikolaus Church, where the composition and first singing of the World’s most popular Christmas Carol, “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” (Silent Night, Holy Night) took place.

Learn the legendary story of Pastor Joseph Mohr and School Master Franz Xaver Gruber (also the community organist) who struggled with a broken organ on Christmas Eve 1818. Mohr came up with a poem named “Silent Night” that he had written two years before, Gruber composed the tune and off they went with “Silent Night” Oberndorf Chapel for a tenor, a soprano, the choir and a guitar accompaniment (under normalcircumstances, it would never have been acceptable for a German song to be played with guitar accompaniment in a church). Includes a traditional, regional German-style dinner. Experience the wonder and sounds of the song that has been translated into more languages than any other religious Christmas song.
[$125] A marvelous, musical morning....
