DESCRIPTION

MUSIC #311 or WORKSHOP (NFC). This course consists of discussion and study of the background of Classicism and Romanticism as it applies to music: forms, content, types of music and their application to the Classic and Romantic periods including correlations with various economic, political and social phases of the periods. Students will attend concerts of Classic and Romantic music in Salzburg and the surrounding area, and will visit important historical sites.

THE INSTRUCTOR

Concert Pianist, Robert Miller received his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. A former faculty member of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he was Van Cliburn’s rehearsal pianist, Dr. Miller has made numerous appearances throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. As winner of the F. Lammot Belin Arts Scholarship, he performed a solo recital at Carnegie Hall and the Salle Cortot in Paris. He is Artistic Director of the Carter Chamber Music Series at East Stroudsburg University where he is a Distinguished Professor of Music. He recently appeared as Guest Artist with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles and at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall with New York Philharmonic musicians. He will tour Australia in 2007. REQUIREMENTS & ADDITIONAL FEES

The course is open to all students (UG) interested in the Music & Composers of the Classic and Romantic eras. Though some basic knowledge of music would be helpful, it is not mandatory in this exploration of the Classic and Romantic eras. Classes are structured so that both the novice and professional will broaden their understanding and appreciation of the subject. The class will attend concerts at the Schloss Mirabell and Mozarteum. Visits to the Mozart Birthhaus and Wohnhaus are also scheduled. Tuition fees for sem. hrs. are: $618 in-state UG +$204 GF*; $1533 out-state UG +$220 GF*; $981 in-state G +$231 GF*; $1569 out-state G +$247 GF*. [ * GF=General Fee (General/Technology/Transfer Fees by ESU are also charged).] The Workshop (NFC) is $ 00. Academic fees are billed by and payable to East Stroudsburg University (ESU); workshop fees are billed by and payable to CSA (all fees due prior to departure). Additional fees: Students should be prepared to purchase tickets to several concert performances and pay entrance fees into several museums and various points of interest (approx. $100 total).
