Description
HISTORY UG#113/UG#313 Europe’s Crossroads: Austrian History and Culture is an introduction to Austrian History and some of the greatest achievements of Austrian culture. It begins with an examination of the Danubian plain as a place of cultural exchange and conflict. Next it will trace the unlikely ascent of the house of Habsburg, rising through advantageous marriages to become the hegemonic rulers of a vast New and Old World Empire. Finally follow Austria’s post-Habsburg history, the willing anschluss with Hitler’s Germany and the uneasy neutrality of the Cold War period. The second part of the course will cover some of the achievements of Europe’s crossroads, where the patronage of the Emperors brought forth humanity’s most rewarding work. Mozart is the focal point of the study of Austrian culture, see that he is one of a legion of brilliant artists, musicians and builders; all of whom have left a visible legacy in the classroom, the city of Salzburg.
